This training is designed for mental health clinicians or new play therapists who work with children in agencies, private practice, and school settings who are interested in learning more about play therapy interventions and techniques. We will cover the basic rationale, history and theoretical concepts of play therapy. The application of developmentally appropriate introductory techniques specific to play therapy will be demonstrated. We will explore cultural sensitivity and how to demonstrate cultural competency within the play room. Lastly, participants will be introduced to the toys and materials needed to begin their play therapy journey.

2. Identify basic play therapy techniques and developmentally appropriate interventions.

3. Describe how to create a culturally responsive and well-equipment play therapy environment.

Joanne Dunningan

Joanne Dunnigan, LCSW, RPT-S is a licensed clinical social worker, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and credentialed clinical supervisor in New Jersey. Joanne holds a certificate in Structural Family Therapy. She is the founder of About Kids, a private practice established in 2000, and has served as an adjunct professor in the Play Therapy Certificate Program at Monmouth University. Joanne established the Therapeutic Nursery Groups Program at Hackensack Meridian Health and is a past president and board member of the New Jersey Association for Play Therapy (NJAPT). Joanne founded the Play Therapy Consortium of NJ. She is also the co-founder of the Play Therapy Academy, providing training, supervision, and professional development for play therapists and mental health clinicians.

Lisa Zaffarese

Lisa Zaffarese, MS LPC NCC ACS RPT is a National Board Certified Licensed Professional Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist™ and is pursuing her RPT-S credential. In practice since 2012, Lisa’s extensive clinical experience includes work in partial hospitalization programs, in-home services and schools. Currently, her private practice Profound Insights applies the therapeutic powers of play to support children, adolescents and families. An adjunct since 2012, Lisa teaches graduate play therapy courses at Monmouth University and psychology at Brookdale Community College. Additionally, she is a clinician for school-based program, Effective School Solutions. Lisa, is the former President and current board member of the New Jersey Association for Play Therapy. She continues to be active member of the Association for Play Therapy. Lisa was an active participant of the Play Therapy Consortium of NJ. Lisa is also the co-founder of the Play Therapy Academy, providing training and professional development for play therapists and mental health professionals.
