Course Description

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) challenges us to live mindfully and meaningfully, despite our challenges, difficulties, traumas, and diagnoses. In this workshop, you’ll learn about ACT and how it can help people get “unstuck” in order to embrace their lives, even the painful parts. Through lecture and experiential exercises, participants will gain familiarity with this evidence-based therapy, then have an opportunity to apply their learning to case conceptualization and practicing an ACT-inspired technique.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the fundamental principles of ACTDiscuss the empirical evidence for ACT

  • Explain 2 differences between ACT and CBT

  • List and discuss the 6 processes of the ACT Hexaflex

  • Apply an ACT conceptualization to a case example

  • Practice one technique relevant to the ACT Hexaflex processes

Instructor

Jonathan Kaplan, PhD

Jonathan Kaplan, PhD works as a clinical psychologist in New York City where he serves as the Director of the SoHo CBT + Mindfulness Center. For over 25 years, he’s provided cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based interventions. Through his work, he earned Diplomate status in CBT and been featured in The New York Times, O. Magazine, PBS, and various news programs. He has written books on mindfulness and ACT. He’s led workshops at Amazon, NYU, Bellevue Hospital, and many other places. Currently, he serves as President of the NYC Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.
